What is Tumor Bowel?

Bowel tumor, also known as colorectal tumor or colon tumor, is any tumor that effect the colon(large bowel) and rectum (back passage). It usually grows very slowly over a period of up to 10 years, before it starts to spread and affect other parts of the body. Most bowel tumor start as benign innocent growths- called polyps on the wall of the bowel. Polyps are like small spots or cherries on stalks and most polyps are not pre-cancerous. One type of polyp called an adenoma can, however, become cancerous (malignant).

What is Symptom of Bowel Tumor?

Bowel tumor may not present any symptom at early stage and some symptoms of later bowel tumor can also occur in people with less serious medical problem, such as haemorrhoids (piles). There are several symptom of bowel tumor:

  • Bleeding from the back passage (rectum) or blood in stools.
  • A change in normal bowel habits to diarrhea or looser stools, lasting longer than 4 to 6 weeks.
  • A lump that doctor can feel in back passage or abdomen usually on the right side.
  • A feeling of needing to strain in back passage which as if needed to pass a bowel motion.
  • A lower than normal level of red blood cells.
  • Losing weight.
  • Pain in abdomen or back passage.
What is risk factor of bowel tumor?

    • Age

Bowel tumor can occur in younger people but 8 out of 10 people who get tumor of the bowel are over the age of 60.

    • Diet

It will increase the risk of bowel tumor with diet that is high in red meat and fat and low in vegetables, folate and fibre may increase the risk of bowel tumor.

    • Lack of exercise

Moderate exercise may help prevent bowel tumor.

    • Obesity

The risk will increase if the people being obese or overweight.

    • Smoking and alcohol

Smoking may also increase the risk of bowel tumor, particularly in heavy drinkers. Other than that, alcohol consumption may increase risk, especially in those with low levels of folate in their diet.

    • Family history

Most of case of bowel tumor due to an inherited gene defect. Other than that, there are certain families who have an increased risk of developing bowel tumor due to a variety of conditions including familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and heredity non-polyposis colon tumor (HNPCC).

    • Personal History of bowel tumor

The people who having had bowel tumor before will increase the risk of bowel tumor and it is possible new tumor to develop.
